Holiday Pyjamas for Kids: How to Choose a Safe Fit
Holiday pyjamas are often chosen for the photos, but children wear them to bed, sometimes near candles and a hot stove. In Canada, children's sleepwear has its own safety rules, and the cut and fabric are what count.
Why does the fit of pyjamas matter?
Health Canada explains that children's sleepwear sold in Canada must meet strict flammability requirements, to help protect children from burns if their sleepwear touches a stove element, a candle or a match. It also notes that loose-fitting sleepwear, with flowing skirts, wide sleeves or wide ruffles, may be more likely to catch fire than tight-fitting styles such as polo pyjamas.
A snug two-piece set with cuffs at the wrists and ankles, or a sleeper, keeps the fabric close to the body.
Does the fabric change the choice?
Health Canada says cotton, cotton blends and rayon tend to catch fire and burn more quickly than most synthetic materials, while nylon and polyester do not catch fire as easily and tend to burn more slowly. If you prefer 100% cotton, tight-fitting sleepwear is the safer option. If your child wears a loose style, Health Canada suggests a slower-burning fabric.
Many soft pyjamas are made from bamboo, which is processed into rayon (also called viscose). On a label, look for "bamboo rayon" or "viscose from bamboo". Here too, choose a snug cut.
Are our holiday pyjamas snug?
Silkberry Baby describes its Gingerbread Party set as 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex, with a snug, stretchy fit, a ribbed neckline and ribbed cuffs. It comes in sizes from 12-18M to 6X (7/8).

Bamboo Long Sleeve Pajama Set (Gingerbread Party Print)
Lulush describes its Winter Cottage set as 95% viscose from bamboo and 5% spandex, designed for a snug fit, and states that it is not flame resistant. For fabrics that burn quickly, Health Canada's advice is a snug cut. It comes in sizes 2T to 7/8 Y.

Winter Cottage Two Piece Pyjama Set
Both brands label their sizes by age (12-18M, 2T, 7/8 Y), and the listings show no measurements. Choose the size your child wears now; if you're unsure between two sizes, ask us for the brand's measurements before you order.
How do you choose the right size?
Health Canada advises size-appropriate sleepwear: pyjamas that are too big can come into contact with a source of fire more easily and may burn more quickly. Buying a size or two ahead so the set lasts until next December defeats the purpose of a snug fit. A snug fit should still let your child move and sleep comfortably.
What should you check before bedtime?
Health Canada recommends dressing children in actual sleepwear at bedtime, because some daywear may not meet the sleepwear requirements. A party outfit or a T-shirt is not a pyjama. It also asks parents to check sleepwear regularly for loose buttons, snaps or zipper pulls, which could become a choking hazard, and for loose threads that could wrap around fingers, toes or the neck.
For babies, Health Canada's safe sleep tips say a simple, fitted sleeper is safest and that babies should be dressed so they don't overheat. Our guide to choosing a sleep sack TOG covers warmth at night.
Frequently asked questions
Are bamboo pyjamas safe for sleep?
Most bamboo pyjamas, including the two shown here, are made of rayon (viscose), which Health Canada lists among the fabrics that burn more quickly. Choose a snug, cuffed style in your child's current size.
Should I buy a bigger size so they last longer?
No. Health Canada advises size-appropriate sleepwear, because pyjamas that are too big are more likely to touch a source of fire.
Can my child sleep in a holiday outfit?
It's best to change into sleepwear at bedtime. Health Canada notes that some daywear may not meet the flammability requirements for sleepwear.
When should I order holiday pyjamas?
Most of our products are shipped directly by our partner brands. Orders are generally processed within 1 to 3 business days and delivered 3 to 10 business days after shipping. An order with items from several brands may arrive in separate parcels, each with its own tracking number. If you want them for a specific date, order a few weeks ahead.
