Nobody warns you that starting daycare is a logistics project. The adjustment, the goodbyes, the naps — that part you expected. The part that catches parents off guard is simpler: the bag. Use this checklist as a starting point, then follow the list from your child-care centre; its routine, storage and outdoor program take priority.
What goes in the spare-clothes bin?
Start with one or two complete changes unless your centre asks for a different number. Complete usually means a top, bottom, underwear and socks, plus any diapering items on the centre’s own list. Check the cubby regularly, replace what comes home and rotate the contents as the weather and your child’s size change.
Which clothes help a child dress on their own?
Daycare routines can include toileting, outdoor play and rest. When developmentally appropriate, simple fasteners and elastic waists can help a child participate in dressing. Comfort and fit come first; ask the centre whether it has preferences for indoor shoes, footwear closures or clothing for outdoor play.

How do you dress for a full day, indoors and out?
Temperatures can change over a full day. Adjustable layers make it easier to add or remove warmth, but the forecast and your centre’s outdoor routine should guide the exact pieces. How should you label clothes?
Follow the centre’s labelling instructions for clothing, footwear and comfort items. Label both pieces of a pair where requested and make sure the name remains readable after washing.
What should stay home?
Health Canada advises avoiding scarves, mittens with strings and clothing with drawstrings near the head and neck, because they can get caught on playground equipment or fences and pose a strangulation risk. It suggests neck warmers and mitten clips instead, and removing any drawstring near the neck of hoodies, jackets and coats. Waist drawstrings longer than 7.6 cm can also pose a risk. Follow the centre’s rules for jewellery and personal objects, and keep irreplaceable items at home.

When should you order before the first day?
If you buy daycare clothes online, count the delivery time. According to our Delivery page, most of our products are shipped directly by our partner brands: orders are usually processed within 1 to 3 business days, then delivery usually takes 3 to 10 business days. An order with items from several brands may arrive in separate packages, each with its own tracking number. A special-order item, reserved in the next arrival, takes 15 to 30 business days.

Send clothes you are at peace with losing to paint, mud and spaghetti. Daycare days are work days for a toddler — dress them for the job.
Do I really need to label everything?
Follow your centre’s instructions and label every item it asks you to identify, including pieces that separate into pairs. A clear name makes it much easier to return clothing to the right cubby.
