What Clothes Does a Newborn Need in the First Weeks?
A newborn's wardrobe can stay small: choose comfortable, washable clothes that fit now and are easy to change. Sleepwear, warmth and the car seat deserve more attention than a particular fabric or a stack of one size.

Why start with bodysuits?
A bodysuit is a simple daytime base layer. An envelope neckline, with overlapping shoulder panels, can open wide enough to slide the garment down over the shoulders after a diaper leak instead of pulling it over the head.

What makes a good sleeper?
Health Canada says babies are safest in simple, fitted sleepwear, like a sleeper; daywear often has hoods, straps and other parts that can become dangerous during unsupervised sleep. Sleepwear that is too big can ride up and cover your baby's nose and mouth, so do not size up sleepers to make them last. Check them regularly for loose buttons, snaps, zipper pulls and threads, and fix them.

Why do newborn sizes vary so much between brands?
Because the first size has many names. In the sleepers and bodysuits our partner brands list on our site (checked on 1 October 2026), it is called, for example, Newborn at Lulush, MARKLIEN and ba.be.O, NB at Création Jade and Silkberry Baby, 0-1 mois on the Bébé Fafa bodysuit above (other Bébé Fafa bodysuits start at 1-3 mois), and 0-3 mois at Mini Biscuit. Silkberry Baby also sells combined sizes such as NB-3M and NB-6M.
Most of these listings give a size name without measurements. Where a brand offers both Newborn and 0-3 months, as Lulush does for the sleeper above, Newborn is the smaller one. When a listing gives a weight or length range, compare it with your baby; otherwise, ask us before ordering.
When should you order before the birth?
A few weeks ahead. Most products on our site ship directly from our partner brands: our delivery page gives 1 to 3 business days of processing, then usually 3 to 10 business days of delivery, and items from several brands may arrive in separate parcels. Some listings are preorders with a later ship date; since spring 2026, most questions in our chat have been about availability and ship dates on preorders. Check each listing before counting on it for the first weeks.
How should you dress your baby for the temperature?
INSPQ notes that if the room is comfortable for you, it is comfortable for your baby, and that 20 to 22 °C is appropriate indoors. To check whether your baby is too hot, touch the neck: it should not be damp. Health Canada adds that babies do not need hats indoors, because a hat can make them too hot. Remove outerwear once inside. Outside in the cold, cover the head, hands and feet well. For sleep, avoid weighted sleep sacks, swaddles and blankets, which Health Canada says are not safe.
What can your baby wear in the car seat?
The Canadian Paediatric Society says bulky clothing or snowsuits should not be worn in the car seat, because they can interfere with proper harness tightening and placement. Dress your baby in thin layers and tighten the harness every trip: you should not be able to pinch the strap at the shoulder. The SAAQ adds that an infant seat cover or thermal liner should not be used while transporting your baby, because it can displace the harness straps, and that accessories not sold with the seat should not be used unless its manufacturer makes them and confirms they are compatible.

How many newborn clothes do I need?
Enough for your laundry routine. Six to eight bodysuits and about as many sleepers is a shopping example, not a health requirement.
Should I buy newborn size or 0–3 months?
Go by your baby's weight and length, and the brand's measurements when the listing gives them, not by the label alone. Do not size up sleepwear: too big, it can ride up and cover the nose and mouth.
What fabric is best for a newborn?
Choose comfortable seams, suitable warmth and care instructions you can follow. A fibre name such as cotton or bamboo does not, by itself, prove a garment's safety or skin benefits.
Can my baby wear a coat in the car seat?
Not a bulky coat or snowsuit: the Canadian Paediatric Society advises against them. Follow your car seat manual, and ask a qualified car seat technician if the fit is unclear.
