For hygienic reasons, plan on replacing pacifiers every 4-6 weeks.

For your baby's safety: Inspect the pacifier carefully before every use — especially once baby has teeth — and pull it in all directions. At the first sign of damage or weakness, throw it away. Pair it only with dedicated pacifier holders tested to EN 12586, and never attach other ribbons or cords to a pacifier, as your baby could be strangled by them. The pacifier must not be stored in direct sunlight.

How to clean your pacifiers: Parents often reach out with doubts about cleaning their pacifiers — and with so much advice of varying quality in circulation about how and how often to do it, feeling confused is understandable. Here is a rundown of proper cleaning, the right frequency, and a couple of persistent myths worth retiring.

Care instructions: Sterilize each pacifier before use. Bring water to a boil, pour it over the pacifiers, and leave them to soak for roughly 5 minutes. Take them out and let them dry. The nipple can hold on to a little water — simply squeeze it to release the water, then leave it to cool and dry for 3-4 hours. If a pacifier shows any irregularity, our advice is to discard it right away. And because these pacifiers are made of natural rubber, the nipple may expand somewhat with use.

How to sterilize, in four simple steps:
1) Place the pacifiers in a clean bowl
2) Cover them with boiling water
3) Let them soak for approx. 5 min.
4) Take them out and let them dry

The vast majority of pacifiers have a valve. If the nipple has one, be sure to squeeze any leftover water out of the seat part once the nipple has cooled enough.

Tip: Once your child is over 3 months old, you can also rinse pacifiers by setting them in a sieve and pouring boiling water over them — a method that is partly quicker, and partly keeps water from collecting inside the seat part.

Caution! We regularly hear from parents who followed the National Board of Health's recommendation to cook the pacifier for 5 minutes before first use and daily afterwards — and ended up with broken pacifiers. DO NOT COOK them. They are not meant to be boiled, and the high heat destroys them. Stick to the instructions above instead, and you'll kill the bacteria without compromising the pacifier's durability.

How often should they be cleaned? Frequent cleaning is part of good sucking hygiene. The younger the child, the more it matters to protect them from bacteria and keep pacifier hygiene up — among other reasons, because a young immune system hasn't yet met very many different bacteria, and so hasn't learned to "defend" against them. Premature infants and babies up to 3 months therefore need more thorough, more frequent cleaning than babies past 3 months — meaning the pacifier must be cleaned more often while your child is under 3 months.

0-3 months: scald the pacifier every time it has been on the floor, and at least once a day on top of that.
3+ months: rinse the pacifier once a day, and run it under the cold tap whenever it has been on the floor.
