Choosing a pacifier can feel overwhelming when so many options line the shelves, and parenthood is already a remarkable adventure that brings its own stress for new families unsure which products suit their little one. The truth is that no nipple size or shape is inherently correct or incorrect, since every baby is unique, so trying a range of shapes and sizes is the best way to land on the right fit.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PACIFIERS?

Parents frequently reach out unsure how to clean their pacifiers, and with so much conflicting advice on method and frequency, the confusion is understandable. Here we walk through cleaning them properly, how often it is needed, and we debunk a few stubborn cleaning myths.

Care Instructions:

Sterilize each pacifier before its first use: boil water, pour it over the pacifiers, and let them soak for roughly 5 minutes before lifting them out to dry. Because the nipples can trap water, squeeze each one to release it, then leave them to cool and dry for 3-4 hours. Discard any pacifier showing irregularities right away. Note that natural rubber nipples may expand over time with use.

HOW TO STERILIZE THE PACIFIERS:

Cleaning takes just four steps: place the pacifiers in a clean bowl, cover them with boiling water, let them soak about 5 minutes, then remove and dry them. Most pacifiers include a valve, so once a valved nipple has cooled enough, press out the excess water trapped in the seat. TIP: Past 3 months of age, you can also set the pacifier in a sieve and pour boiling water over it, which is quicker and keeps water from pooling inside the seat. Caution! Some parents follow the National Board of Health's guidance to boil pacifiers for 5 minutes before first use and daily afterward, but this ruins them. DO NOT COOK them; the high heat destroys them. Follow the steps above instead and you will eliminate bacteria without sacrificing durability.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN THEM?

Frequent cleaning is central to good sucking hygiene, and the younger the child, the more crucial it becomes to guard against bacteria, partly because a young immune system has not yet encountered or learned to defend against many of them. Premature babies and infants up to 3 months therefore need more thorough, more frequent cleaning than older babies. From 0-3 months, scald the pacifier every time it hits the floor and at least once daily; from 3+ months, rinse it once a day and run it under cold water whenever it has been on the floor.
